Native South Carolinian, Rachel Laney, first began making baskets with natural vines in the early 1990's. Her craving for do-it-yourself projects stems from the notion of having things customized for personal liking. Being very frugal, she transforms ordinary materials into unique pieces of art.
Fashioning jewelry from horsehair, refinishing furniture, and general repurposing of items are her specialties. In making these items, she uses items from her own collection or transforms her customers’ personal materials into truly one-of-a kind works, whether weaving chair-bottoms from a customer’s own necktie collection or incorporating the mane- and tail-hairs of a customer’s horse into a piece. To keep things interesting and fresh, she moves from project to project while still maintaining the same level of detail and craftsmanship.
